Description

USACTIV indicates the main activity of the respondent during their stay in the United States if they resided for six months or more during the previous five years (for the 1970 sample) or during the previous 10 years (for the 1980 and 1990 samples). Code "4," "Other," is a residual category indicating that the respondent's main activity was something other than being in the U.S. Armed Forces, working at a job or business, or attending school or college.

See USARESID for a dichotomous variable indicating whether or not respondents had resided in the United States for six months or more during the preceding five-year or ten-year period. See also the related variables: USAYRRET, which provides the year of return to Puerto Rico for those respondents who had lived for six months or more in the United States, and USADURR, which indicates the length of stay for those respondents who had resided in the United States for six or more months during the preceding five year or ten-year period.
