Description

USAYRRET details the year of return to Puerto Rico for those persons who had lived in the United States for six months or more during the preceding five (for the 1970 Puerto Rico sample) or ten (for the 1980 and 1990 Puerto Rico samples) year periods and had subsequently returned to live in Puerto Rico at the time of the Census enumeration. See USARESID for a dichotomous variable indicating whether or not respondents had resided in the United States for six months or more during the preceding five-year or ten-year period. See also: USADURR, which indicates the length of the stay for those respondents who had resided in the United States for six or more months during the preceding five-year or ten-year period and USACTIV, which indicates the main activity (military, work, school, etc.) of respondents who had resided in the United States for six months or more during the preceding five-year or ten-year period.

The year of return is measured relative to the year of the Census enumeration, such that a code of "1," "This year (this year or previous year for 1970 sample)," indicates that the respondent returned to Puerto Rico from the United States in either 1969 or 1970 for the 1970 sample, in 1980 for the 1980 sample and in 1990 for the 1990 sample. Likewise, a code of "2," "Previous year," indicates that the respondent returned to Puerto Rico from the United States in 1979 for the 1980 sample and in 1989 in the 1990 sample (note that code "2" does not exist for the 1970 Puerto Rico sample), and so on for codes "3" through "10."
