Description

VERSIONHIK identifies the public release version of the HIK values for each census year.

HIK is a universal identifier key used to track individuals across historical censuses. HIKs are the product of a complex linking process developed by the Multigenerational Longitudinal Panel (MLP) project. The MLP project and a description of the linking process are described at the Multigenerational Longitudinal Panel home page.

The historical full count data files and the MLP links are not typically updated in tandem. VERSIONHIK records the full provenance of each iteration of the HIKs. It combines the version of the underlying historical full count data file (VERSIONHIST) and the MLP version that generated the HIKs. For example, a VERSIONHIK value of "1.0-2.0" indicates that the public release version of the historical full count file is "1.0" and the public release version of the HIKs (MLP) is "2.0".
