Description
In the U.S. census and ACS samples, ACREHOUS indicates whether a single-family house or mobile home was located on 10+ acres.
In the Puerto Rican samples in 1980 and 1990, ACREHOUS indicates whether a single-family house or mobile home was located on 3+ cuerdas. In the Puerto Rican sample in 2000 and the PRCS, ACREHOUS indicates whether a single-family house or mobile home was located on 10+ cuerdas.
Users Note
The traditional unit of land area in Puerto Rico is the cuerda. The cuerda is equal to about 3930 square meters, 4700 square yards, or 0.971 acres. Because the cuerda and the acre are so close to being equal, they are often treated informally as being equal. Mainlanders sometimes call the unit the "Spanish Acre." The IPUMS has preserved the units for the mainland U.S. as acres and Puerto Rico as cuerdas.

Comparability
Comparability of this variable across years is affected by several factors: universe changes, the conversion of acres to cuerdas between the U.S. and Puerto Rican samples and the change from 3+ to 10+ cuerdas as the baseline measurement between the 1980-1990 Puerto Rican samples and the 2000 Puerto Rican sample and the PRCS.

QACREHOUEditing Procedure
ACREHOUS
(Lot size)
ACS Years: 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016
ACS editing procedure:
If a person living in a mobile home, detached single family, or attached single family has a lot size (ACREHOUS) that is blank, don't know, refused, or a bad value, the value of ACREHOUS is allocated. The allocated value is an ACREHOUS value of another unit of the same type of building (UNITSSTR), which shows if a building is a mobile home, detached single family, or attached single familyand in the same geographic unit (it is not specified what level of geography is used). When this happens, the flag will show that the value is allocated (QACREHOU).
If a person living in an apartment building or in a non-traditional residence like a boat (UNITSSTR) has a value for ACREHOUS, it will be changed to a missing value.
Relevant IPUMS editing procedures:
For comparability with 1980, IPUMS collapses the values of "Less than 1 acre" and "1 to 9.9 acres" into a broader category of "Less than 10 acres" for years 2000 to 2014.
