Description

VEHICLES reports the number of cars, vans, and trucks of one-ton capacity or less kept at home for use by household members. The 1990 U.S. Census instructions explicitly included company cars regularly kept at home and used for non-business purposes and excluded junk vehicles and vehicles used only for business purposes.

Comparability

Apart from the differing Top codes in the 1990 samples (7 in the U.S. samples and 4 in the Puerto Rico sample), this variable is comparable across years. Similar information can be obtained for 1980 by combining the variables AUTOS and TRUCKS. Automobiles are counted for 1960 and 1970 in the variable AUTOS. The 1970 instructions for AUTOS excluded "taxicabs, pickups, and larger trucks"; the 1960 instructions for AUTOS did not.

ACS Years: 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015
ACS editing procedure:
If the number of vehicles available (VEHICLES) is blank, don't know, refused, or a bad value, the value of VEHICLES will be allocated. The allocated value is the reported number of vehicles available from another unit with the same ownership status (OWNERSHP, which shows if the unit is owned with a mortgage, owned without a mortgage, or rented), the same type of building (UNITSSTR, which shows if a building is a mobile home, detached single family, or attached single family), and in the same geographic unit (it is not specified what level of geography is used). When this happens, the flag will show that the value is allocated (QVEHICLE).
If a vacant unit (VACANCY) has a value for VEHICLES, it will be replaced with "Not in universe."
