Description

For respondents who lived in a different residence 1 year before the survey date, MIGCOUNTY1 identifies the county (or county equivalent) where the respondent lived at that time, if the prior residence was in an identifiable county.

MIGCOUNTY1 uses the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) coding scheme, as is used by COUNTYFIP. FIPS county codes are state-dependent, so MIGCOUNTY1 must be combined with state codes (see MIGPLAC1) to distinguish counties located in different states.

MIGCOUNTY5 provides analogous information for 2000 census samples, using a 5-year rather than a 1-year reference period.

MIGCOUNTYICP5 provides analogous information for 1940 full-count microdata, using a 5-year reference period and ICPSR county codes (as used by COUNTYICP) rather than FIPS codes.

The source PUMS files do not directly identify the county of prior residence. IPUMS instead identifies counties, where possible, from Migration PUMAs (MIGPUMA1). In multi-year ACS/PRCS samples that span different Migration PUMA definitions, this variable is based on whichever Migration PUMA definition is associated with the respondent's survey year (as given by MULTYEAR). This occurs only in the 2022 5-year samples and in multi-year samples that include both 2011 and 2012 survey years. MIGCOUNTY1 identifies a county if and only if:

• it was coterminous with a single Migration PUMA; or

• it contained multiple Migration PUMAs, none of which extended into other counties.

MIGCOUNTY1 is a 3-digit numeric variable that identifies the county where the respondent lived 1 year ago using the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) coding scheme.

MIGCOUNTY1-Specific Variable Code
000 = Not in universe, or county not identifiable from public-use data

Note that the 000 code applies to individuals who lived in the same residence 1 year ago as well as those whose previous residence was in an unidentifiable county. Users who wish to distinguish these two conditions should use MIGRATE1 in conjunction with MIGCOUNTY1.
