SELFWTHH
Self-weighting sample identifier

Description

SELFWTHH indicates whether the household is included in a self-weighting subset of the 1940 or 1950 samples. These subsets constitute flat samples, in which every case is weighted equally. If cases are selected using SELFWTHH (i.e., with cases limited to those coded as 2 for SELFWTHH), it is not necessary to use HHWT or PERWT to generate nationally-representative statistics. If the full 1940 or 1950 samples are used, weights must be used to create nationally representative statistics.

The self-weighting samples exclude roughly two-thirds of the cases in 1950 and 5000 cases in 1940. See "Sample Designs" for more information about the 1940 and 1950 samples.

SELFWTHH should not be used if the analysis requires sample-line variables (those for which the availability code in 1940 or 1950 is "SL"). The person-record variable SELFWTSL identifies a self-weighting subset of sample-line persons.
