Description
IPUMS USA cannot identify most counties in recent samples.
PRCOUNTY identifies the household's municipio (municipality) of enumeration using a University of Wisconsin Survey Center (UWSC) coding scheme. Municipios are the primary geographical divisions in Puerto Rico. For statistical purposes, the Census Bureau treats municipios as the statistical equivalent of U.S. counties.
Each municipio is divided into barrios, and one or more of these barrios constitute the pueblo or town in the municipio. This town always bears the same name as the municipio. The enumeration districts were arranged so that each barrio was a separate district, except larger barrios, which were made up of two or more complete enumeration districts.
In the 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses, there were, respectively, 68, 76, and 77 municipios in Puerto Rico. In 2000 and later years, there are 78 municipios, but most are not identifiable in public use microdata. For these years, IPUMS identifies municipios, where possible, from Public Use Microdata Areas (PUMA) or, in the 2000 1% sample, from Super-PUMAs (PUMASUPR). A listing of the municipios that PRCOUNTY identifies in 2000 and later samples is given in the "Puerto Rico" sheet of this Excel document:
For the alphabetic version of Puerto Rican counties/municipios, see PRCOUNTA. For counties in U.S. samples, see COUNTYICP or COUNTYFIP.
For corresponding variables on the Puerto Rican barrios (township) and pueblos (city) codes, see PRTWNSHP (an alphabetic variable) and PRCITYCO (a numeric variable), respectively. The township (barrio) and county (municipio) codes should be used in conjunction to identify the respective barrio and municipio location.
PRCOUNTY is a 2-digit numeric variable that identifies the household's municipio of enumeration using a University of Wisconsin Survey Center (UWSC) coding scheme. Municipios are the primary geographical divisions in Puerto Rico. For statistical purposes, the Census Bureau treats municipios as the statistical equivalent of U.S. counties.
For a listing of 1910-1930 PRCOUNTY codes, see UWSC Municipio Codes.
