Description

XGPS reports the longitude coordinate (x-coordinate), in degrees and minutes, associated with the household's address. This variable is only available for households in cities included in the Urban Transition Historical GIS Project (see UTP). The y-coordinate is available as YGPS.

The Urban Transition Historical GIS Project is directed by John Logan, Professor of Sociology at Brown University. The project uses historical census data to document the state of U.S. cities from the end of the 19th Century into the early 20th Century. Households in 39 cities are geocoded in 1880. More information is available on the project website.

XGPS is a 17-character floating-point number.
