Description

FWAGE1 reports the total wage and salary income, for the previous calendar year, for the primary family (the household head and persons related to the head). For non-family households (groups of unrelated individuals), the income of the primary individual is given. Only the income of persons present in the household at the time of enumeration is included.

1940 includes less information on income than in subsequent years. Information on wage and salary income was collected for persons age 14 and above (see INCWAGE). FWAGE1 sums these income figures for the household head and all household members related to the head (if present). The only other income information available for 1940 is in the dichotomous variable INCNONWG, which indicates whether individuals had more or less than $50 income from sources other than wages and salary.

This variable is only available for 1940. FWAGE1 is a 5-digit numeric code which reports the previous calendar year's total wage and salary income for the primary family (the household head and persons related to the head). For non-family households (groups of unrelated individuals), the income of the primary individual is given. Only the income of persons present in the household at the time of enumeration is included. FWAGE1 specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below by Census year (and data sample if specified).

Comparability

This variable is only available for 1940. Researchers can replicate FWAGE1 for other years by summing the values in INCWAGE for all members of the primary family.
