MIGSPUMA1
Migration Super-PUMA of residence 1 year ago

Description

For respondents who lived in a different residence 1 year before the survey date, MIGSPUMA1 identifies the location where the respondent lived at that time, in terms of the Migration Super Public Use Microdata Area (Super-PUMA) of migration.

See PUMASUPR for further discussion of Super-PUMAs.

See the 2000 Migration PUMAs and Super-PUMAs reference page for a listing of the Super-PUMAs that comprise each Super-PUMA of migration.

Migration Super-PUMA codes are state-dependent, so MIGSPUMA1 must be combined with state codes (see MIGPLAC1) to distinguish Super-PUMAs located in different states.

Users may also want to consult the related variable, MIGPUMA1, which provides information on the Migration PUMA of prior residence.

Note about 2012 and later ACS samples: The Census Bureau redraws PUMA boundaries every 10 years based on population information gathered from the most recent decennial census. The 2012 ACS files are the first to use the new PUMA codes and boundaries based on the 2010 Decennial Census. The Census Bureau did not generate new Super-PUMAs based on the 2010 Decennial Census, so MIGPUMAS1 is not available for 2012 or later samples.
