Description

OCC5YR reports the occupation of individuals who indicated they were working at a job or business five years earlier (see WORK5YR). Industry and class of worker were also identified for these individuals (see IND5YR and CLASS5YR).

Comparability

This variable is only available for 1970. The classification system used in OCC5YR is the same as that used for OCC (current occupation), except that the latter variable allocates missing values into residual categories (e.g., "clerical and kindred workers - allocated") representing broad occupational groups. All missing values in OCC5YR are given the same code (995, "Occupation not reported"). See also OCC5YR95 for an alternative classification of responses, using the 1950 classification scheme, to facilitate comparisons across time.
