Description
PROBOTH indicates whether a non-Hispanic gave an 'other race' response to the census race question (see HISPAN and RACE). It is parallel to the four variables indicating the probability of particular single-race responses for multiple race individuals (PROBAI, PROBAPI, PROBBLK, and PROBWHT). See RACESING for an explanation of how these variables can be used. Due to requirements of the bridging methodology used to create RACESING, all people in the 'other race' category of RACESING (code 50) are non-Hispanics who reported only 'other race'. PROBOTH is equal to 100 for these people and is equal to 000 for everyone else. Like the other race probability variables, PROBOTH must be divided by 100 before being used. Hispanics who reported 'other race' as their only race were given code 12 in RACESING to enhance historical compatibility; they have a PROBOTH of 000 and a PROBWHT of 100.
PROBOTH is a 3-digit numeric variable which represents whether a non-Hispanic gave an 'other race' response to the census race question (See HISPAN and RACE). It is parallel to the four variables indicating the probability of particular single-race responses for multiple race individuals (PROBAI, PROBAPI, PROBBLK, and PROBWHT). PROBOTH has two implied decimals. For example, a PROBOTH value of 068 should be interpreted as 0.68. PROBOTH specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below if applicable by Census year (and data sample if specified).
PROBOTH Specific Variable Codes
000 = All Other Respondents
100 = Non-Hispanic 'Other race' Respondents
User Note: Due to requirements of the bridging methodology used to create RACESING, all people in the 'other race' category of RACESING (code 50) are non-Hispanics who reported only 'other race'. PROBOTH is equal to 100 for these people and is equal to 000 for everyone else. Hispanics who reported 'other race' as their only race were given code 12 in RACESING to enhance historical compatibility; they have a PROBOTH of 000 and a PROBWHT of 100. For an explanation of how the predicted probability was calculated see RACESING.
