Description

SAMESEA5 reports whether the respondent lived in the same State Economic Area (SEA) on April 1, 1935 as the person was living in at the time of the 1940 enumeration. State Economic Areas are single counties or groups of contiguous counties within the same state that had similar economic characteristics in 1950. (See SEA for further details). SEAs with fewer than 100,000 residents were combined to form SEAs of at least 100,000 residents to meet confidentiality requirements for the 1940 PUMS. SAMESEA5 also distinguishes persons living abroad five years ago.

The concept of State Economic Area had not yet been invented at the time of the 1940 census. This variable was created by the makers of the 1940 PUMS. SEA of residence in 1940 (identified in SEA) was based on the enumeration district and county where the person was enumerated. SEA of residence on April 1, 1935 (identified in MIGSEA5) was based on the reported county of residence at that date.

Comparability

This variable is only available for 1940. An analogous variable on whether the individual was living in the same SEA one year ago is available for sample-line persons in 1950 (see SAMESEA1).
