Description
IND1950 recodes information about industry into the 1950 Census Bureau industrial classification system and thus enhances comparability of industry data across all years included in the IPUMS. IND1950 was designed the same way as OCC1950 (Occupation, 1950 basis), the procedure for which is discussed in detail in " Integrated Occupation and Industry Codes and Occupational Standing Variables in the IPUMS." The composition of the industry categories is described in detail in U.S. Bureau of the Census, Alphabetic Index of Occupations and Industries: 1950 (Washington, D.C., 1950).
The term "labor force" and other key employment concepts are defined in the documentation for EMPSTAT and LABFORCE.
In the 1850-1930 samples, the universe for IND1950 relied on persons having an occupation recorded in OCC.
A parallel variable called IND1990, available for the samples from 1950 onward, codes occupations into a simplified version of the 1990 occupational coding scheme.
Universe Note: "New Workers" are persons seeking employment for the first time, who had not yet secured their first job.
Pending 2023 Data: We expect additional documentation to be released with the 2023 ACS/PRCS 5-year data that are necessary for us to update this variable for the 2023 ACS/PRCS 1-year data.

Comparability
User Caution: Industry was first asked as a distinct question in the 1910 censuses (U.S. and Puerto Rican). For earlier samples, industry is inferred from the occupation response. Often, the industry was unambiguous. In fact, one of the difficulties in coding occupations in the nineteenth-century censuses was the penchant for people to report their industry rather than their occupation. Nevertheless, the information on industry for 1850 to 1900 is undoubtedly inferior to the information in later censuses. For cases that were "not classifiable" (code 997), no other values were imputed.
User Note: Due to an error in the source data for the 1960 5% sample, a few cases that should be in universe for IND1950 are mistakenly recoded to 0=N/A. A majority of these cases are in Cook County, Illinois. Please see the 1960 DATA RESTORATION PROJECT page for more information about the restoration of the 1960 5% sample.
Universe
- 1850-1920: Persons of any age with an occupation recorded in OCC (this was for males only in 1850).
- 1930: All persons.
- 1940-1950: Persons age 14+ in the labor force; not institutional inmates, not new workers.
- 1960: Persons age 14+ who had worked within the previous ten years; not persons with a job but not at work last week, not new workers.
- 1970: Persons age 14+ who had worked within the previous ten years; not new workers.
- 1980-2000: Persons age 16+ who had worked within the previous five years; not new workers.
- ACS, PRCS: Persons age 16+ who had worked within the previous five years; not new workers.
