PROBAI
Probability of American Indian race response

Description

PROBAI represents the predicted probability that a multiple-race part-American Indian/Alaska Native respondent in the 2000 census, the ACS or the PRCS would have reported only American Indian or Alaska Native race if asked for a single race response. This predicted probability has been multiplied by 100 for PROBAI; users must divide PROBAI by 100 before using it.

For an explanation of how the predicted probability was calculated, see RACESING.

Single-race American Indians and Alaska Natives have a value of 100 on PROBAI; other single-race respondents have a value of 000. Biracial American Indian/'other race' people also have a code of 100 on PROBAI because of the bridging methodology explained in RACESING.

See also PROBAPI, PROBBLK, PROBWHT, and PROBOTH.

Codes

PROBAI is a 3-digit numeric variable which represents the predicted probability that a multiple-race part-American Indian/Alaska Native respondent in the 2000 census, the ACS or the PRCS would have reported only American Indian or Alaska Native race if asked for a single race response. PROBAI has two implied decimals. For example, a PROBAI value of 068 should be interpreted as 0.68. PROBAI specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below if applicable by Census year (and data sample if specified).

PROBAI Specific Variable Codes
000 = Other Single-race Respondents
100 = Single-race American Indians and Alaska Natives Respondents or Biracial American Indian/'Other race' people

User Note: Biracial American Indian/'other race' people are also coded as 100 because of the bridging methodology explained in RACESING. For an explanation of how the predicted probability was calculated see RACESING.

Comparability

PROBAI is fully comparable across years.
