Description
MIGPLAC5 identifies the U.S. state, outlying territory, or foreign country where the respondent lived 5 years ago.
MIGPLAC1 provides analogous information for 1950 and for ACS and PRCS samples, using a 1-year rather than a 5-year reference period.

Comparability
As the universe statement indicates, users must appropriately restrict cases for comparisons across years, using information in the AGE and MIGRATE5 variables.
For the 1940, 1970 Form 2, and 2000 samples, the specific foreign country where the person lived 5 years ago is reported; for the other samples, only "abroad, not specified" is given for persons living outside the U.S. and its territories 5 years ago.
In 1980, responses to questions about migration were coded for only half the persons included in the IPUMS. These cases provide accurate proportional distributions but not correct absolute numbers for the general population. For correct absolute numbers, users should select cases coded as 2 in MIGSAMP and multiply by 2 as well as by PERWT.
The 2000 5% sample provides significantly less detail than is available for other years. (See migration codes for 2000 5% sample). For all other years, the coding scheme for MIGPLAC5 is nearly identical to that for birthplace (BPL). However, since MIGPLAC5 is a three-column variable and BPL is five columns, some differences were unavoidable. The following areas do not have the same general code in MIGPLAC5 as in BPL:
