Description
TRANTIME reports the total amount of time, in minutes, that it usually took the respondent to get from home to work last week.
In 1980, responses to questions about travel time to work were coded for only half the persons included in the IPUMS. These cases provide accurate proportional distributions but not correct absolute numbers for the general population. For correct absolute numbers, users should select cases coded as 2 in MIGSAMP and multiply by 2 as well as by PERWT.
TRANTIME is a 3-digit numeric variable reporting the total amount of time, in minutes, that it usually took the respondent to get from home to work last week. TRANTIME specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below by Census year (and data sample if specified).
TRANTIME Specific Variable Codes
000 = N/A
888 = Suppressed for data year 2023 for select PUMAs
Values Exceeding Top codes, by State: 2003 - onward
Comparability
In 2023, data for select PUMAs were suppressed due to a data collection error. A new code, 888, was added to note these suppressants. For more information, see the Census Bureau note on the Data Collection Error for Travel Time to Work Question in Nueces County, Texas".
This variable means essentially the same thing across years, although the 1980 and 1990 forms instructed respondents to include time waiting for public transportation or for other passengers in carpools.
Universe
- 1980: Persons age 16+ who worked outside the home last week; 50 percent of cases (see MIGSAMP).
- 1990-2000: Persons age 16+ who worked outside the home last week.
- ACS, PRCS: Persons age 16+ who worked outside the home last week.

QTRANTIMEditing Procedure
TRANTIME (Travel time to work)
ACS Years: 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015
ACS editing procedure:
For any person who is not a worker (EMPSTAT) or who worked at home (TRANWORK), the usual travel time to work last week value (TRANTIME) will be replaced with a not in universe value.
If a person is a worker (EMPSTAT) and did not work at home (TRANWORK), but their travel time to work (TRANTIME) is Blank, Don't Know, Refused, Bad Value or 0, the value of TRANTIME will be allocated. The allocated value is drawn from another person with the same sex (SEX), metropolitan status (METRO), method of transportation work (TRANWORK), and number of riders (RIDERS). When this happens, the flag will show that the value is allocated (QTRANTIM).
If a person is a worker (EMPSTAT) and did not work at home (TRANWORK), and their travel time to work (TRANTIME) is greater than 200, the value of TRANTIME will be replaced with 200. When this happens, the flag will show that the value is allocated (QTRANTIM)
