MOVEDIN
When occupant moved into residence

Description

MOVEDIN reports the number of years ago that each person (for 1960-1970), or that the householder (for 1980 on), moved into the dwelling unit (apartment, house, or mobile home). Persons who moved back into the same house or apartment where they lived previously were to report the year when they began the present occupancy. Persons who moved from one apartment to another in the same building were to report the year they moved into the present apartment.

The question on the form asks in what year the person had moved into this house, apartment, or mobile home. The IPUMS recodes the original categories into lengths of time to increase comparability.

The Census Bureau released revised data for the 2004 ACS in November 2010. MOVEDIN reports these revised values. We provide MOVEDINORIG so that users can analyze the differences in the revisions or replicate previous analyses. However, we recommend that users analyze the revised variable MOVEDIN in their research. For more information about this revision, please see the ACS website.

Comparability

The response categories for 1960-1970, 1980-2000, and the ACS and the PRCS are all different. For 1960 through 2000, comparable categories of "this year or last year," "2-10 years," and "11+ years" can be made by combining IPUMS codes.

The 1980-2000 censuses, the ACS, and the PRCS differ from earlier years because the variable is only available for the householder, the first person listed on the form. The information for 1960 and 1970 was taken from individual person records, while that for 1980-2000, the ACS, and the PRCS was drawn from the household records. The year that the householder moved in is not necessarily the same year other members of the household moved in. Non-householders in 1980-2000, the ACS, and the PRCS are coded N/A.

For 1980, respondents who indicated that they "always lived here" are assigned to the category corresponding to their year of birth.

ACS ACS Years: 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016
ACS editing procedure:
If a vacant unit (VACANCY) has a value for when the unit was built or when the reference person moved into the unit (BUILTYR2, MOVEDIN), it will be replaced with a "Not in universe" value.
If the year the reference person moved into a unit (MOVEDIN) is after the survey year (YEAR), it will be replaced with the survey year. When this happens, the flag (QMOVEDIN) will indicate the value was allocated.
If the year the reference person moved into a unit (MOVEDIN) is before when the reference person was born (BIRTHYR) or entered the U.S. (YRIMMIG), it will be replaced with a blank value.
If the year the reference person moved into a unit (MOVEDIN) is before when unit was built (BUILTYR2), BUILTYR2 will be replaced with a blank value. If the year the reference person moved into a unit (MOVEDIN) is less than 1800 and the year built is 1939 or earlier, the BUILTYR2 will be replaced with a blank value.
If the year the reference person moved into a unit (MOVEDIN) and the year the unit was built (BUILTYR2) are both blank, they will be allocated jointly from another unit similar building type (UNITSSTR). When this happens, the flag (QMOVEDIN, QBUILTY2) will indicate the value was allocated.
If the year the reference person moved into a unit (MOVEDIN) is blank, it will be allocated from another unit with similar value for OWNERSHP (2008 and later, also BUILTYR2). If the allocated value of MOVEDIN is before when the unit was built, the allocated value will be discarded. Four attempts will be made to allocate the value of MOVEDIN. If the four attempts fail, it will be left blank. When MOVEDIN is allocated, the flag (QMOVEDIN) will indicate this.
If the year the unit was built (BUITLYR2) is blank, it will be allocated from another unit with a similar building type (UNITSSTR). If the allocated value of BUILTYR2 is after the reference person moved into the unit (MOVEDIN), the allocated value will be discarded. Four attempts will be made to allocate the value of BUILTYR2. If the four attempts fail, it will be allocated as the year the reference person moved in. When BUILTYR2 is allocated, the flag (QBUILTY2) will indicate this.
Beginning in 2008, there was a write in box to specify the year if the house was built after 2000. If 2000 or later is selected, but there is no year in the write in box, it will be allocated. The allocated value is drawn from another unit built after 2000 with a similar building type (UNITSSTR).
IPUMS editing procedure:
The question on the form asks in what year the person had moved into this house, apartment, or mobile home. The IPUMS recodes the original categories into lengths of time to increase comparability.
