Description

YRIMMIPR reports the year in which a foreign-born person came to Puerto Rico to stay.

For the 1980 and 1990 samples, the respondent was asked to select the range of years that included their year of arrival. For the 2000 census and the 2005-onward PRCS, exact years are reported back to 1935 and some earlier years are collapsed into categories. The codes for all such categories represent the latest possible year in which a respondent could have immigrated.

YRIMMIPR is a 4-digit numeric variable reporting the year in which a foreign-born person immigrated to Puerto Rico. YRIMMIPR specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below if applicable by Census year (and data sample if specified).

Comparability

This variable is available only in the 1910-1920 and 1980-2000 Puerto Rico censuses and the 2005-onward PRCS.

The 1910 and 1920 Puerto Rico censuses asked when a person arrived in the United States or Puerto Rico. All other samples asked for the person's arrival in the United States only. See YRIMMIPR for a variable which reports year of immigration to Puerto Rico only (for modern samples).

In the 1980 Puerto Rico census, the question was asked of people born outside of both Puerto Rico and the United States. In all other samples, the question was asked of those born outside of Puerto Rico. Thus the universe for the 1990, 2000, and PRCS samples includes those who moved from the United States to Puerto Rico. The 1980 samples do not include this group.

The 1980 and 1990 Puerto Rico censuses asked when a person came to Puerto Rico to stay. The 2000 Puerto Rico Census and the PRCS asked when the person came to live in Puerto Rico.
