Description
YRSPR2 reports how long a person who was born in a foreign country or U.S. outlying area had been living in Puerto Rico.

Comparability
For the years in which Puerto Rico immigration data is available (1910-1920, 1980-2000, and 2005 onward), YRSPR2 is constructed from the information available in YRIMMIPR, since there was no separate question about years in the United States.
The 1910 and 1920 censuses asked for the year of the person's first arrival in Puerto Rico; the 1980 and 1990 censuses asked when the person first came to stay; the 2000 census and PRCS asked when the person came to live in Puerto Rico. In the 1990 and 2000 censuses and the PRCS, the question was asked of persons born in outlying areas, as well as of the foreign-born. In 1910-1920, persons born in outlying areas were legally considered foreign-born and are therefore included. The universe for 1980 is not completely comparable, because these years did not include persons born in outlying areas.
The samples from 1980 to 1990 reported multi-year intervals rather than the precise year of immigration. YRSUSA2 provides the most compatible categories possible from these years, and applies the same intervals to the rest of the data.
Information on years in the United States by single years is available for the 1910-1920 period and for 2000 onward in the variable YRSPR. Equivalent information for United States data is available in YRSUSA1.

- 1980: Persons born outside of Puerto Rico and outside of the United States; not born abroad of American parents. Available for Puerto Rico samples only.
