Description
YRSPR indicates how long each foreign-born person had been living in Puerto Rico. Since the Puerto Rican Census did not include a specific question asking for years living in Puerto Rico, YRSPR is constructed using the information available in the variable YRIMMIPR. The variable is constructed by subtracting the YRIMMIPR variable from the sample year. Note that YRSPR does not reflect any time that foreign-born persons may have spent outside of Puerto Rico between the year of immigration and the time of enumeration.

YRSPR is a 3-digit numeric variable reporting how long each foreign-born person had been living in Puerto Rico. This variable is constructed by subtracting the YRIMMIPR variable from the sample year. YRSPR specific variable codes for missing, edited, or unidentified observations, observations not applicable (N/A), observations not in universe (NIU), top and bottom value coding, etc. are provided below if applicable by Census year (and data sample if specified).
YRSPR Specific Variable Codes
000 = N/A or less than one year
User Caution: Since the YRSPR code 000 encompasses two meanings (N/A or less than one year), users who want to distinguish between the two need to interpret this code in conjunction with BPL as follows. For those with BPL less than 10000 (born in the U.S.), YRSPR = 000 means "N/A." For those with BPL code 10000 or greater (born outside the U.S.), YRSPR = 000 means "less than one year."
