Description
FARMPROD, which applies primarily to rural households, reports the previous year's gross sales of farm produce in contemporary dollars. For censuses, the reference period is the previous calendar year; for the ACS and the PRCS, it is the past 12 months. The Census Bureau used this variable to determine farm status (see FARM).
In 1960, not all households received this question, and only households outside cities with 50,000+ residents in the IPUMS include the question. Such cases accurately represent proportional distributions but not correct absolute numbers. See SAMP1960 for instructions on making appropriate corrections to derive absolute numbers for the total population outside cities with 50,000+ residents.

Comparability
Largely because methods for determining farm status changed, FARMPROD's universe varied across years. For 1960, sales amounts were reported in different intervals for units on less than 10 acres than for units on 10+ acres. Furthermore, different years grouped dollar amounts into different intervals, so the IPUMS codes are generally not compatible across samples and years. As the codes and frequencies indicate, each year's intervals were coded separately, so, for the most part a particular IPUMS code stands for a different amount in each year. The codes are the same for the 1990-2000 censuses, the ACS and the PRCS.

FARMPROD (Agricultural sales)
ACS Years: 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016
ACS editing procedure:
If a person living on a lot that is more than one acre (ACREHOUS; note that IPUMS harmonization pools those under 1 acre and between 1 and 9.9 acres) has an agricultural sales (FARMPROD) that is blank, don't know, refused, or a bad value, the value of FARMPROD is allocated. The allocated value is a FARMPROD value of another unit of the same type of building (UNITSSTR) and lot size (ACREHOUS) and in the same geographic unit (it is not specified what level of geography is used). When this happens, the flag will show that the value is allocated (QFARMPRO)
In the computer assisted telephone interviews and computer assisted personal interviews (RESPMODE), some respondents stated "Yes" to the question about agricultural sales, rather than giving a numerical value. When this occurs, FARMPROD is allocated a value from another unit with the same building type (UNITSSTR) and lot size (ACREHOUS) and where FARMPROD was a positive value. When this happens, the flag will show that the value is allocated (QFARMPRO)
If the lot size (ACREHOUS) is less than 1 or is blank, don't know, refused, or a bad value, but they report a positive value for FARMPROD, it will be changed to a missing value. Likewise, if a unit is vacant (VACANCY), but there is a positive value for FARMPROD, it will be replaced with a missing value.
