Description

WORK5YR indicates whether respondents were working five years earlier.

Comparability

While both 1970 and 1980 distinguished between persons who were and were not working five years ago, the 1980 form also distinguished between full-time work (35 hours or more per week) and part-time work (less than 35 hours per week).

Responses for 1970 include a "not reported" category. For 1980, the Census Bureau allocated responses in cases of missing data. Individuals in the 1970 Form 1 samples who responded "yes" to the WORK5YR question were asked additional questions about their occupation, industry, and class of work 5 years ago (see OCC5YR, OCC5YR95, IND5YR, and CLASS5YR). These additional questions were not asked in 1980. WORK5YR is not available for Puerto Rico in 1970.

Along with asking about work five years ago, the 1970 and 1980 censuses asked whether the respondent was attending college or in the armed forces five years ago. These questions were not mutually exclusive; individuals responding "yes" in WORK5YR may be included in other 5-years-ago variables, such as COLL5YR and MILIT5YR.
