FUGITIVE

Fugitive individual

Description

FUGITIVE indicates if the record represents an enslaved person who was reported as a fugitive at the time of the census. Fugitive status was supposed to be reported at the holding level, not for individual enslaved persons, but some enumerators appear to have diverged from the instructions. FUGITIVE identifies these relatively rare individual cases. These cases are also included in the holding-level variable NFUGITIVES, which provides a comprehensive count.

Data on fugitives are unavailable for Oklahoma and most of West Virginia. Cases in areas where fugitive data were not processed are coded to missing.

The variable is only available in 1860.
