MANUMIT

Manumitted individual

Description

MANUMIT indicates if the record represents an enslaved person who was freed (manumitted) in the year prior to the census. Manumitted status was supposed to be reported at the holding level, not for individual enslaved persons, but some enumerators appear to have diverged from the instructions. MANUMIT identifies these relatively rare individual cases. These cases are also included in the holding-level variable NMANUMITS, which provides a comprehensive count.

Data on manumissions are unavailable for Oklahoma and most of West Virginia. Cases in areas where manumission data were not processed are coded to missing.

The variable is only available in 1860.
