Manumitted slave (individual-level)(Menard)Description
MANUMIT_IND indicates if the record represents an enslaved person who was freed (manumitted) in the year prior to the census. Manumitted status was supposed to be reported at the holding level, not for individual enslaved persons, but some enumerators appear to have diverged from the instructions.
Only cases included in the MENARD sample are included in the universe for MANUMIT_IND.
