NFUGITIVE indicates the number of slaves reported as fugitives from the holding at the time of the enumeration.
There are significant data quality issues with this variable, as some enumerators appeared to report this information for individual slaves rather than at the holding level as instructed. The column on the census form was also often used for office tabulation, producing many erroneous entries. This produced interpretive issues for processing. In consequence, the microdata record fewer fugitives than the published census results.
The variable is only available in 1860.
