NMANUMIT indicates the number of slaves reported as manumitted from the holding within the past year.
There are significant data quality issues with this variable, as some enumerators appeared to report this information for individual slaves rather than at the holder level as instructed. The column on the census form was also often used for office tabulation, producing many erroneous entries. This produced interpretive issues for processing. In consequence, the microdata record fewer manumissions than the published census results.
The variable is only available in 1860.
