NMANUMITS indicates the number of enslaved persons reported as manumitted (legally freed) from the holding within the past year.
There are significant data quality issues with this variable, as some enumerators appeared to report this information for individual slaves rather than at the holder level as instructed. The column on the census form was also often used for office tabulation, producing many erroneous entries. This produced interpretive issues for processing. If an enumerator identified individual slaves as manumitted, those cases are summed in NMANUMITS, making it a comprehensive count.
Data on manumissions are unavailable for Oklahoma and most of West Virginia. Cases in areas where manumission data were not processed are coded to missing.
The variable is only available in 1860.
