1900 Occupations, 1950 Basis
This page presents the 1900 sample's original classification of occupations into the 1950 census occupation coding scheme. These codes are recorded in the IPUMS variable OCC0050. The original 1900 sample coded occupations directly into the 1950 classification, adding an extra digit for additional detail. In addition to this unique 1900 system, the IPUMS codes all census years (including 1900) into the 3-digit 1950 occupation classification scheme, recording them in the variable OCC1950. In 1900, the OCC1950 codes are derived from OCC0050. The 3-digit OCC1950 classification has corresponding income and status measures recorded in the variables SEI and OCCSCORE.
