2020 Migration PUMA Definitions
The 2020 definitions of Migration Public Use Microdata Areas (Migration PUMAs) are used in 2022 and later ACS and PRCS samples to identify where respondents moved from. See the MIGPUMA1 variable description for more information.
In multi-year ACS/PRCS files, PUMA boundaries depend on the year the respondent was interviewed. (See MULTYEAR.) For example, in the 2018-2022 5-year ACS sample, responses from 2018 through 2021 use 2010 definitions of Migration PUMAs, while responses from 2022 use 2020 definitions.
Each 2020 Migration PUMA corresponds exactly to one or more 2020 PUMAs and also to one or more 2022 counties or county equivalents. We provide two composition files for 2020 Migration PUMAs below: one identifying component PUMAs and another identifying component counties or county equivalents.
2020 Migration PUMAs and Place-of-Work PUMAs are identical, so we provide the same composition files for both entities.
