2000 PUMAs and Super-PUMAs
The 2000 version of Public Use Microdata Areas (PUMAs) is the lowest level of geography identified in the 2000 census 5% sample and the ACS/PRCS samples from 2005 to 2011. Super-PUMAs are the lowest level of geography in 2000 1% samples. The 2000 PUMAs nest within super-PUMAs; each super-PUMA is comprised of two to six PUMAs.
In Multi-Year ACS/PRCS files, the version of PUMAs identified depends on the year of interview (see MULTYEAR). For example, in the 2010-2012 3-year ACS sample, 2000 PUMA codes are reported for 2010 and 2011 respondents, and 2010 PUMA codes are reported for 2012 respondents.
The tables linked to below give the detailed composition of each 2000 PUMA and super-PUMA. PUMA and super-PUMA composition information from all states is also available as one downloadable ASCII file.
Note: In the 2006-2011 ACS, persons living in Louisiana PUMAs 01801, 01802, and 01905 were all coded as living in Louisiana PUMA 77777. Due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina, the original three PUMAs no longer had sufficient population to be separately identified.
